Drama Mini-Reviews

Filed under: Uncategorized — chipsandtofu @ 12:30 pm

I thought I should keep track of my dramas, and hopefully I’l actually remember the reasons why I wasted the hundreds of hours watching these useless crap 😉 These are all just random thoughts I had.
Most Recent/Just Finished by July 2009:

Taiwanese:

Black and White [24eps + upcoming movie in 2010]: I saw the trailer for this drama almost half a year before it started to air on TV, and my anticipation never waned off. Sure enough, it was well worth the wait. Awesome cop-show, Vic really stepped up his acting, and newbie Mark Zhao is pretty good as well, and the 2nd female lead Zhang xx is really pretty.  Action-packed, funny lines, good plot build-up, but because I had spent too much time analyzing and waiting for the upcoming episodes, I pretty much guessed the ending after watching ep 22. But definitely re-watchable material. Definitely not your typical Taiwanese drama.

My Queen: Funny comedy, it serves as a reminder that a single woman in her thirties should not give up on love, and at the same time, live happily as a single lady, focusing on her career, friends, yoga, hair, skin-care, and all the fancy girly stuff. (Okay, the show didn’t really mention anything about Beauty101, but I think it’s implied) Lucas (the male character) is love. I didn’t really like his looks (Ethan Ruan is good-looking, but not my cup of tea…because he reminds me of  the pic below) , but his personality, the stubborn righteous, yet mature way of thinking is really applaudable. He’s learned to not be overly protective of the WuShuan (female lead), not only because WuShuan herself is very independent, but because he recognizes that relationships have to be equal.  This has come a long way from the sexist male-dominant romantic comedy market both in Taiwan, Korea, and Hollywood (yes, I’m talking about you, Twilight).
Recommended for its Modern setting and thoughts. oh yeah, soundtrack, and clothes =D She pulls of elegant office-lady cloth and hair very nicely.=D

La Bi Xiao Xin, a Chinese cartoon character

Wang’s Class Reunion / 老王同學會: This is a weeknight drama targeted towards family, not teenagers, I only watched it for 陈汉典, because he’s just really funny in other variety shows. Overall it was a heart-warming drama, with funny scenes, but nothing to get your hormones going. Recommended for family time =D P.S. 陈汉典 is really talented, no matter how many people bash him as a boring, annoying person. i’ll rant/rave on that on another day.

all the other Taiwanese dramas that came out in 2009 are a waste of time, so far.

The new Easy Fortune Happy Life / 福氣又安康 is predictable,  even though Blue Lan is one of my favourite actors. I’ll wait for the whole thing to come out, since I don’t have the time to catch it on a weekly basis at the moment.

Korean Dramas

Boys over Flowers: Everyone raved/ranted about it. Watch it for the eye-candies, although I don’t understand how anyone can find SS501’s leader hot =(. Lee Minho and KiBum are the only eye-catchers, and I found myself watching only Lee minho’s internal struggle and KiBum’s smiley chuckles, and Yi Jeong and Ga Eul-plot line was the only one I was rooting for and diligently following. I knew the ending to the main plotline 8 years ago, lol.Enjoyed it, but I’m over the hype now.

Brilliant Legacy/Shining Inheritance:

With almost 50% viewership, I was only hooked onto 10 episodes into it. Han Hyo Joo is pretty, (I loved her look in Spring Waltz, although I never finished that series). Lee Seung Ki came as a big surprise, and brought me back into the Korean Variety show phase. Because of him, I re-watched some of the x-man clips, and am now hooked on 1Night2Days. Lots of blogs and news articles have already mentioned that his is the only person in the Brilliant Legacy (SBS) AND in 1Night2Days (KBS) [note different broacasting stations], and both shows garnered around 30%-40% ratings. Although he’s not the only reason, he’s definitely one of the top reasons for this phenomenon.

Plot-wise: didn’t like Seung-mi’s Mom and Junse’s dad. Heck, I didn’t even like Junse that much. (Others raved about his looks, but I just felt sorry for him, and thought he was still very 1-dmensional ( I know, I saw his internal struggles, too).  But I guess all the filler side-plots served a greater purpose to convey the overall theme of the drama, and made everything in the plot intertwined. The plot was centered around Grandmother’s inheritance, and also of Hwan (Lee Seung Gi)’s coming-of-age process. Romance was delightfully slow, cute, but it was mainly about overcoming hardship and growup, and understand the true meaning of inheritance (we should inherit values, not money.)

Partner:

Lee dongwok was good in My Girl, but he’s AMAZING in Partner. His facial expressions convey so much childish play, internal struggle against his broken family, and his guilt. It’s amazing. The cases are okay to watch, but I love both the female and male character’s professionalism when working together. They’re just so compatible.

Critique so far: side-story of other collegues in the law firm are a bit boring. Honey Lee is hot, and acts pretty well. but I’m not interested in these side stories.

2008 dramas worth watching:

I Do? / 幸福的抉擇: I already gave my review.

Fated to Love You / 命中註定我愛你: okay for hormones, this one garnered high ratings, but I think it is rather plain.

Police et vous / 波麗士大人: Blue Lan is in it. Another cop show, like Black and White. but less -action packed, but more of a character-development drama. Loved the first 6 episodes, and I continued to watch the previews. Good drama that has more sentimental values of “good and bad” packed in it, rather than just pure romance.

Miss No Good / 不良笑花: silly, but I watched it for Wilber Pan. Rainie’s accents bugged me. a lot. but Wilber saved the show. I enjoyed watching his character grow into a more likable, approachable person. Side characters are boring, and too silly. This is recommended for little kids, lol.

Love or Bread / 我的億萬麵包: waste of time. a rather shallow drama, didn’t cover anything important, barely passable if you like ariel lin. Considering that it only took them 35 days to film 13 or 14 episodes, this deserves a  C-.Passed, but a C-.

Hot Shot / 籃球火: watch it for basketball, or Show Luo goofing around. nothing substantial. Jerry, the guy in Fahrenheit (Wuzun, I forgot his name for a whole min), and even the female leads were not that outstanding. The Coach, Jiang Yi, is a tall tanned beautiful model. Gah. Her debut acting is passable, only because she was pretty, lol.

Sweet Relationship / 美味關係: slow character-development type of drama. good if you like Patty Hou or Vic Zhou. This drama is very realistic, and there are a lot of unspoken feelings left in the air. Good work, Director!

Corner with Love / 轉角*遇到愛: Show Luo and Da S. Both can act really well. I enjoyed almost everything about it. Funny, sometimes slap-stick humor. Very cute. Highly recommended.

They Kiss Again / 惡作劇2吻: Better than It started with a kiss. Ariel got smarter, and you can feel the husband-wife connection. A solid B.

Past Korean Dramas:

see Dramabeans for recaps/year-end reviews.

I enjoyed:

2007:

Que Sera Sera (A-)

Coffee Prince (A-)

Mixed-up Investigative Agency (really recommended) (A)

Witch Amusement (C+)

Hello Miss (F)

Dal Ja’s Spring (A)

2008:

Who Are You?  (A-)

Hong Gil Dong (A)

Love and Marraige (A)

STRONGEST CHIL WOO (B) this is so weird, so you’ll definitely get a laugh out of its quirkiness.

to watch list:

story of a man

partner (airing right now)

dream (kibum) – possibly.

style (korean’s version of devil wears prada) – we’ll See.

Easy Fortune Happy Life / 福氣又安康
